DONALD DOGBO

Donald Dogbo has become a favourite in the expanding jazz world, and for good reason. His blending of traditional African drumming and jazz fusion is truly a marvel. [...] Donald Dogbo has music in his blood and you see that while he mans the kit as a group of jazz virtuosos chew the sonic scenery. You may recognize songs from his 2021 album Coubli, or, in the true spirit of jazz, get a completely improvised experience.

Here and elsewhere, the critics have given Donald Dogbo’s first album, Coubli (Disques Nuit d’Afrique / Believe Digital) rave reviews.

Born into a family of drummer-composers dating back to his great-grandfather, Donald Dogbo is a Canadian-based visionary musician, drummer, arranger, and composer from Ivory Coast.

After being Senegalese rapper Didier Awadi's appointed drummer for several years, he moved to Canada in 2014, where he immediately integrated and excelled on the Montreal and Canadian artistic scenes. He began performing and recording with such Quebec-based world music talents as Djely Tapa, Wesli and Élage Diouf.

In 2021, he released his first album titled Coubli, which means " to go on an adventure" in his native language Bété. His music is inspired by the evolution of jazz music, which has deep roots in Africa and which projects itself into contemporary achievements catalyzed by his various musical and cultural encounters in Africa until his arrival in Canada.

Coubli now has a highly acclaimed album to his name and features several notable collaborators, who join Donald to contribute to his signature dense and thrilling amalgamation of styles.
