DONALD DOGBO

Donald Dogbo has become a favourite in the expanding jazz world, and for good reason. His blending of traditional African drumming and jazz fusion is truly a marvel. [...] Donald Dogbo has music in his blood and you see that while he mans the kit as a group of jazz virtuosos chew the sonic scenery. You may recognize songs from his 2021 album Coubli, or, in the true spirit of jazz, get a completely improvised experience.

Here and elsewhere, the critics have given Donald Dogbo’s first album, Coubli (Disques Nuit d’Afrique / Believe Digital) rave reviews.

BIOGRAPHY

Born into a lineage of drummers through his grandfather, Donald Dogbo is a visionary Ivorian musician, drummer, arranger and composer based in Canada.

After being the regular drummer for Senegalese rapper Didier Awadi for several years, he moved to Canada in 2014, where he immediately integrated and excelled on the Montreal and Canadian artistic scenes. He began performing and recording with Quebec world music talents such as Djely Tapa, Wesli and Élage Diouf.

In 2021, he released his first album entitled Coubli, which means "going on an adventure" in his native language Bété. His music is inspired by the evolution of jazz music, the one that takes deep roots in Africa and projects itself into contemporary achievements catalyzed by his various musical and cultural encounters from Africa until his arrival in Canada.

Coubli now has a highly acclaimed album to his name and features several notable collaborators, who join Donald in contributing to his signature dense and thrilling amalgam of styles.
